Martin Motorplex

Summerville, South Carolina

February 20, 2010

A Race Report

They began to arrive early for the Southern Six event at Todd Martin’s new race venue located in the Spanish grass laden low country of South Carolina. The circuits at Martin’s Motorplex consist of a TOMY 16-foot roadcourse named the “Red Rocket” which was built by Fray racer Kevin Browning who used every trick in the book when placing trick “S” curves in places you would not suspect them. The course is extremely technical and has two lane splits, long sweeping “S” segments and quick chicanes mid straight. Few of travelers could get a grip on any sort of flow during practice and much like OHM’s roadcourse it will take several visits to master this track. The second track in Todd’s race room is a 18-foot black Maxx called Summerville Speedway and configured in a Tri-oval with three different radius corners with different banking. A few years back the racers in the Sportsman series may have had an easy time on any oval, but the speeds are now hitting absurd and several drivers took one too many trips into the outside walls delegating them to “Behind the Wall” status.

After being welcomed by Todd and his beautiful young family we held practice from 8:00am until Tech Call at 11:30am. The Mrs. served up a great lunch of baked pasta and meatballs that we finished off with some of scrumptious Brownie cupcakes and it was time to line them up.

When running venues with two circuits the series attempts to get the classes running simultaneously so the 15 racers were split into 3 groups and the “Muscle” cars began to rumble onto the Red Rocket. There is one characteristic that all tough tracks have in common, they are fun to drive, but you got to drive. Heat One saw track owner Todd Martin take everyone to school as he wheeled his Dodge around the Rocket with ease putting up 18 and 17 lap totals that even the local boys knew would take a perfect race to beat. Case in point, Kevin Browning scored his second track call in the third heat and said there and then, “I just gave it to him”. Of course many of us did not make it to the third heat, I for one had 4 of my 9 allowed track calls in the first 2 minutes if racing, most likely the worst performance of the day but several racers ended up with their rides parked along side mine. Kevin and another SC racer, Ricky Fender completed the podium on our first trip to this track, but is certain that we all want to get back there for another go at this test, 2011 cannot get here fast enough.

When the cars went into the cool down lap we had the 15 racers posted as:

Todd Martin – 70 laps

Kevin Browning – 68

Ricky Fender – 58

Tony Puzzello – 58

Skylar Spake - 58

Gary Butner – 58

Dewayne Hoyle – 57

Ray Utz – 56

Chris Walker – 54

Lewis Wuori – 54

Alan Moss – 53

Damian Puzzello – 48

Bill Kurtz – 35

Andy Lancaster – 33

Mike Reed – 31

With the Muscle cars in the garage we switched our attention to the Tri-oval side of the room which now took center stage as racers pushed themselves to grab every point available as the series is now entering it’s final months.

Five minute heats on this track would put all to the test as it is fast, sub 3 second laps were the norm in practice by many of the top racers and a few pulled them off in the race as well. Chris Walker did what Chris Walker does, put up a total in his battle with Tony Puzzello that put the pressure on all the rest.

With a 92-87-93-90 heat it would take a trouble free run to challenge and group 3 brought him just that. A final five with Lewis Wuori, Gary Butner, Kevin Browning, Bill Kurtz and Mike Reed took to the track and set a pace that would blast not only Bill Kurtz, 93-94-95-92 into second but point’s leader Kevin Browning with a 97-96-95-96 into the Winner’s Circle. Southern Six was in the books and Kevin had his 5th win of the season, followed by:

Kevin Browning – 383 laps

Bill Kurtz – 369

Chris Walker – 356

Lewis Wuori – 354

Tony Puzzello – 351

Todd Martin – 350

Skylar Spake – 337

Ray Utz – 335

Gary Butner – 331

Dewayne Hoyle – 324

Alan Moss – 314

Andy Lancaster – 305

Damian Puzzello – 181

Mike Reed – 176

Ricky Fender – 130

With the points racing finished for the day, it was time for just some good old HO racing fun and the IROC class introduced to the Southern Sportsman Series provided just that. We had four identically prepared Ford Torino Short Track cars prepared for this event and although all the same on drawing board, each had their own personality. All were fast, one was squirrelly with some coast, one a little short on top end but handled in the corners and two that were sweet to drive. The racers were relaxed and the joking, laughing and smiles were in abundance as we wheeled these JLs around the Maxx, learning what they could do while breaking in four new chassis for Todd’s Sportsman stable.

As the checkered flag dropped we had:

Gary Butner – 262 laps

Kevin Browning – 261

Chris Walker – 254

Bill Kurtz – 253

Todd Martin – 251

Dewayne Hoyle – 249

Lewis Wuori – 247

Tony Puzzello 247

Ray Utz – 243

Andy Lancaster – 241

Allen Moss – 237

Skylar Spake – 234

Mike Reed – 171

Damian Puzzello – 139

Ricky Fender – 72

The fun of the IROC race put the cap on a great day, the Martin Family is now our favorite in Summerville, SC and we can’t thank them enough for opening their doors to us rowdy boys.

We head to New Hill, NC for the Muscle Championship and the Sportsmans of Southern 7 on March 20th. Only 3 to go so grab them points while ya can boys !

i sat out for 2 lanes and came back in on red and i finished with 56 and 2 track
calls we ended up 9 track sections apart with todd ahead way to run bud you
are getting tough to beat
the rest of the field battled and door banged the hole race tony and alan went
back and forth with damion and ray close be hind but i think tonys trigger
finger failed him he started wrecking cautions breed cautions he ended up with 9
track calls which killed his final lap score and allowed damion to beat him by

this weeks racing in CHARLESTON SC with LCHORS

hey every one hope every body had a good weekend
for some reason last weeks post did not post so i will do a double
ok last week we were at tonys we did a lot of tinkering and building of indy
cars so we only had 1 race and it was SOUTHERN MUSCLE ON THE MONSTER it was some
great racing every body stayed close tod went 1st 3 lanes with out a crash kevin
had 4 in the 1st 3
but i think todd layed back and took it to easy thinking he had me and he
started having some bad luck ended up have 6 crashes in the last 3 lanes tony
and alan was close behind they to had to many crashes to catch us here are the
totals
56 kevin 4 wrecks
51 todd 6 wrecks
48 alan 8 wrecks
41 tony 13 wrecks
34 mike 19 wrecks
26 rickey 22 wrecks
24 damion 22 wrecks
so it was alot closer of a race if we had not counted the wrecks
will post this week next

this week we were at ALANS RACING PALACE he has 3x7 4 lane little monster and a
2 lane wicked 1/32 track racer started to gather at about 1.30 rans about 3 laps
then the food started hitting the table and we all said WHAT RACE sat down and
had 3 kinds of wings potato salad, cole slaw,chips,vegs,brownies-brownies --more
brownies (thanks to alans wife)
omg we all ate to much took naps then raced todd won one tony won one
but the food we started to snack again
alan and ever one that brought food thanks thanks thank
alan make sure you thank your wife
kevin

i forgot the turkey and all the drinks wow what a day

after all the food we took naps an the we thought well we are here we might as
well race so off to the box stock t-jets crash and burn
the track is new lane lenghts the same you still had to drive through the tracks
quirks and the boys did a great job
right out of the box todd was 1st racer to get to drive all 4 lanes and he set
the bar very high with all 1st or sencond place finishes as the rest us raced
through tony started to rise to the top he had no 4th place finishes the crash
were many the burns were few but wow this was fun we laugh till our jaws were
sore were the oil smoke and that burnt pancake motor smell cleared todd was on
top by 3 points over tony way to run guys
13 todd
17 tony
19 ray 3 wins
19 kevin 2 wins
21 alan
25 mike
28 ricky had not ever seen box stock car

cant get much closer than that

then it was brownie time and o the brownies wow then there was choc cake wow no
wonder i feel so bad

after that it was time to go upstairs to the 1/32 track its 2 lane we lined up
and rotated through these cars hit the wall hard and make a lot of noise every
time a car hit the wall alan bent over in painevery time he heard crash (they
were his cars) when all was said and done todd and tony were the only 2 with 2
wins
so we went to a 10 lap shoot out that ended in a tie so then we ran a 10 lap
best lap time for the win todd was 1st he laid down a 365(afx lap timer)then it
was tonys turn and with 2 laps to go in his run he popped a 355 to take the win
way to run tony

again alan thanks for having us and all the food
cant wait for the next time

after racing crash and burn on alans track we have decide to run 1 crash and
burn race on the monster next week and a southern muscle race time permits
southern sportsman
thanks for reading

Boy o Boy what a trip ELECTRIC MOTOR SPEEDWAY it is in the boonies for us city folk at one time during the back roads of NC the boys start play the banjo theme from Deliverance as we traveled the winding roads… LOL….

Word is Dwayne and Chris stayed till 4am getting things ready. Thanks boys.  Racers arrived early to practice SC boys got there  at about 930 am then Gary, Andy , Lewis and Jeannie followed 12 racers in all(Lewis only ran

Southern Muscle and Jeannie Southern Sportsman)

Dwayne is a car nut he has cars every where and I want some of them we just may have to talk about it

At about 11am I voted Tommy in as race manager so he took the bait and ran with it. He and Gary got everyone’s car to tech and  set up computer with all the race data.

Dwayne cleaned track wiped down (brand new track creates plastic and rail dust thanks to Dwayne for keeping it clean) so we could have a great race and that we did.

1ST up was SOUTHERN MUSCLE and these boys were ready car were fast and they handled. This series as come a long way since the beginning the cars I would put up against anybody’s.

Don’t get me wrong this track was tough and fast and I believe there were 2 guys that had car trouble.  As we rotated through it was the guys with a little more experience with fray cars started moving to the top.

When the smoke cleaned and the tires cooled down Kevin B (me) still on a streak was on top with Gary and Lewis close behind.

After penalties subtracted

128 Kevin 4 in a row

120 Gary by just few track sections

120 Lewis

118 Todd

116 Chris

108 Skylar

103 Alan

101 Tony again just sections

101 Andy

99 Tommy car trouble

29 Dwayne car trouble

Note: in picture is Todd’s car Lewis had to take off

Next up our premier class the one that started it all SOUTHERN SPORTSMAN

Omg these cars have gotten so fast and they really liked this track. The track record fell 145 times in the 6 hours we were there (because it was new and we all got faster as the day went on)

Would my streak continue?  NO.  IT WAS ALL THE GARY SHOW on this day he could not miss a corner he was on fire his car was flying it was like it was on rails(he he ha ha ).

There was a few of us that had our troubles today like me I crashed more today then had all season but then there were a few that did not (Alan)

When this was done Gary was out front with Alan and Chris chasing. I was crashing ,Skylar and Dwayne’s cars were hitting the guide pin. Todd and Tonys cars just started dying Andy and Dwayne crashed out.

I can not wait to get back there the track is primo so fun so fast

Dwayne I think you should put an off season race on if you have time I will help if you want to.

Maybe an IROC on the 1/24 track and what ever on the MAX what you think?????

We all missed Bill he had to work and could not make it which allowed the point race to start its end of season shake up

Race totals

127 Gary 1st win of the season

112 Alan best finish of the year

112 Chris again track sections (wow Chris allows in the top 3)

110 Skylar another top 5

102 Kevin what can I say

102 Todd section –moving in on his 1st win

100 tony car issues

98 Tommy new car blues

92 Andy new car bugs

88 Dwayne guide pin issues

69 Jeannie out of sink had not raced for awhile but I am sure she will be back on top

At the drives meeting it was brought up to start a 3rd class we have gotten good at getting through the races and it seems we have time for a 3rd race everyone there wrote down what they would like to run so we will see what it brings

It may come down to what each track owner wants to do 3rd class maybe an IROC race

To all of you that don’t race with us please come join us it’s a ball you are guaranteed to have the best time we have cars controllers and what ever you need to race

DWAYNE thanks for putting up with us and I hope we can get back there soon please thank your mom (I think that was your mom I missed the introduction sorry) for bring the food

You have put together one amazing place thanks

Sorry did not get a full size pic of track

boys we had a great time racing today we had 6 racer show up and we had a ball
laughing ,teasing and tinkering
we started the day tweakig a few cars started our builds on jalopys
(indys) them we decided to run fray/echors cars on the monster
we ran on the 4 out side lanes and ran with track calls (this track takes 6
racer and 6 marshalls to run with no track calls)
we rotated in it all started with kevin on red ray on white ricky on yellow and
todd on blue
at the end of lane 1todd hnd me down by almost a lap down then we rotated when
the smoke cleared tony was making a run for the top spot
at the end of my rotation i had 41 laps which left todd and tony battling each
other and chasing my 41 laps it was way cool to see that everyone had fast cars
and battling lap after lap
when it was all over i won dont know how they were coming fast
41 kevin
38 tony
37 todd
36 mike
35 ray
33 ricky

then i had this bright idea to run a pot luck race
we took everyones car and number them put numbers in the hat and every one drew
a number to match the cars you could not draw your own car it was amazing no one
drew there car
it was crazy see everyone driving some one elses cars or should i crashing
others cars (ricky gave my car a beating wow)
the race came down to the last lane and the last 60 seconds
i had finished with 38 laps and had to wait for the last 2 round to see who
would end up ontop
ricky and tony battled on every lane todd was up by over a lap at the end of the
1st lane every body battle with each other for every lap it was so close but
when the final time went off i won by about a half a lap
38 laps kevin-todds car
38 laps todd -tonys car
35 laps tony -mikes car
34 laps mike -rays car
34 laps ricky-kevins car --car won 1st race
33 laps ray -kevins car

we all had a ball and will do it all over again at todds next week
yeeee haaaa

if any one wants to come down and race with us the door is always open
promise you will have a great time

Wow.  What an awesome weekend at the mountain.  The weather was superb!  The lap
counters counted correctly both days for the first time ever.... And the
Modified Race was simply awesome.  There were so many good cars in this race and
it is amazing how competitive this class is with the rules allowing the
different chassis' and parts.  The lap totals below  will show just how close
this race really was.  Personally speaking, it was my favorite race although I
was outclassed by some guy from Virginia Beach.  Tom Bowman had a superb car on
this day and would not be denied as he cruised to the win.  He also set a new
modified race record by running 424 laps beating the previous record of Ron
Fields Jr's. 411.  Good Job Tom!  In the Southern 500, Ron Fields Jr. set a new
qualifying record at 4.174 and a new race record of 417 laps
(Previous qualifying record was held by Kevin Browning at 4.295 and race laps at
404).  Interestingly enough,
Ron Fields Jr. grabbed the wrong car for the 2nd year in a row as he grabbed
his back-up car being driven by Homer, but the mistake was quickly caught and
corrected.  Lewis Wuori, not to be outdone did the same by grabbing a car lent
out to a fellow competitior.  Bill Kurtz stepped up his performance from last
year and became only the 3rd person to Join the "400 lap club" on the newly
configured tri-oval.  Tommy Jakobowski was the "Ironman" for the weekend
amassing the most total laps of all competitors with a grand total of 1661
edging out Lewis Wuori.  Congrats also go out to Lewis Wuori who won the Trans
Am race..... Kevin Browning who almost ran a perfect race in the Sportsman
Division with only 1 wreck taking the win with 328 laps (On a special note....
please keep Kevin and his mother in your prayers at this difficult time for them
during her illness).... and Tommy Jakobowski who took the podium in the first
ever Vintage Indy Car Race to
be held at the mountain.  Some other drivers that I would like to mention....

1. Rob Rose- Impressive driving for a first year participant unfamiliar with
these classes
2. Rachel Fields- Impressive run in the 500
3. Skylar Spake- Very consistent.  Great cummulative total.  Improving with each
year.

Special Thanks go to a great many racers who helped out during the weekend at
some point with set-up, running races, etc......  Homer who helped run the show
along with Odie Malehorn,  Chris & Jeannie Walker who helped with set-up on
Friday, Jeff Fields who flew down from New York to serve as executive chef for
the weekend and Linda Fields who cooked up a storm.  I am sure there were many
others that I am missing but I will ask dad to fill in the gaps for those I may
have missed.  Also a big thank you to our Sponsors including Bowman Racing
Products (BRP), Parts Pig, and the Historic Trans-Am Series.  We chose not to
ask for sponsors this year due to the tight economy realizing that things are
tough for everyone and these guys stepped up to the plate without being asked
and we are very appreciative for all your support.

Boneshaker 2009 – A Race Report

Western Pennsylvania Slot Car Club

Another Boneshaker race event is in the books and what a fun weekend it was.  Many thanks go out to all the T-jet fanatics taking the time to attend; both local and out-of-town racers.  By the time the green flag fell 35 racers hailing from nine states were lined up at the track.

The racers gathered on Friday evening for open practice and a seminar on basic T-jet building by Hiram Durant.  Paul Kniffen also spoke on resin body mounting for optimal racing performance.  Race day on Saturday brought another open practice session in the morning and the featured race event starting at noon.

The race event featured super stock T-jets (Fray and VHORS rules) in a “Fray Prep” style format.  Thirty second qualifying runs seeded a timed heats round robin race which in turn seeded twelve lap sprint ladder mains with move-ups.  The A-Main to determine the overall podium finishers was one fantastic and competitive race.  Congratulations to Paul Kniffen of Cortland, NY for the overall win.  A cool aside: the A-Main featured six racers each hailing from six different states.  The evening support race featured Trans Am Mustang G-Jets in an IROC championship format.

A special thank you to Mark Frazin and Bridget for hosting the group at their home and for all the great food and beverages made available for two straight days.  The racers greatly appreciated the several vendors set-up throughout the weekend featuring a wide variety of items including racing parts and bodies.  Also a big thank you goes out to our many sponsors for the fantastic race prizes and support of the weekend.

The race results have been summarized in an Excel spreadsheet which can be found in the Files sections of the various Yahoo! groups.  Look for the file entitled “Boneshaker Results 2009.”

Another thank you to everyone who made the Boneshaker 2009 an outstanding slot car weekend!
